Boiler Lifts

3862 & WESTMINSTER BOILERS LIFTED

On Wednesday 6th September 2000 the boilers of both Great Western heavy freight 2-8-0 No. 3862 and Peckett 0-6-0 Westminster were lifted from their frames by an 80 Ton (capacity) road crane. As is usual with this sort of event, it rained almost continuously for the duration of the operation.

Some weeks prior to the start of the operation the saddle bolts had been removed and the boiler jacked to ensure that it was free.

With the chains secured, the boiler was gently rocked to ease it from the frames.

Once clear of the frames the boiler was lifted high over the local clutter.

Before the boiler could be set down in its final resting place the crane needed to be re-positioned. This meant that it first had to be put down on the roadway.

Nearly there!

With the boiler removed it was possible to see the rest of the locomotive from a completely new angle.

Next it was  Westminster's turn.

If the boiler had not have been free, the whole locomotive would probably have gone up in the air with it.

This one came out very easily.

With the two boilers side-by-side the size comparison is quite remarkable.

As soon as the job was finished, the rain stopped, the clouds cleared away and the sun came out.  Such is life!
