The reservoir is home to many species of water fowl, fish and other aquatic creatures, providing nesting sites, food and breeding grounds. The grasslands, scrub lands and trees provide habitats for mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles and includes a vast number of invertebrates.
Of the many species of water fowl recorded on Pitsford Water, most have their nesting sites on the Holcot, Walgrave and Scaldwell areas of the reservoir where there is good cover. However a walk by the water below the Country park along to the causeway will reveal resident Mallard, Coot, Mute Swan, Great Crested Grebe, Canada Geese and sometimes a Cormorant. The grey Heron can often be seen at the waters edge or flying across the fields to pillage a garden pond, and a quick flash of brilliant blue reveals a Kingfisher.
One of the most splendid sights to be seen in local fields after the harvest has been gathered, is a huge flock of Canada Geese feeding on the left over grain. If disturbed their heads go up as one, and with loud honking, they are airborne in seconds.
