Built at Wolverton in 1961 to Lot Nº 30690, 5001 is heavy for a Mk 1 vehicle, weighing in at 37 Tons. This is in the main due to the extra weight of the Commonwealth bogies upon which it sits. It also has a number of other features to be found in later builds of Mk 2 coaches, such as metal window frames, fluorescent lighting and modern luggage racks.
When refurbished in 1985, 5001 was painted with the Inter City livery. It was then allocated to Cricklewood Depot for use on the Midland Main Line. Around 1992 it was transferred again, this time to Liverpool Edge Hill.
It's final transfer was to Oxley (Wolverhampton) for its last few years in traffic. During this period it was used on football specials and is now in need of some internal work before going into service on the NLR.
5001 was purchased from safe storage at MoD Long Marston and arrived at Pitsford & Brampton on 10th January 1997.
