"Castell Dinas Bran" 25035 Bo-Bo

CASTELL DINAS BRAN, 25035 was built at Darlington as D5185 on 25th May 1963. Initially located at Toton and worked on the L.M.R. until 1972 when it was transferred north to Holbeck depot at Leeds. After a short stay there it went to Tinselly in Sheffield.

In 1975 it travelled north again to Haymarket Edinburgh. Its final home depot was Crewe from where it regularly operated over the Cambrian lines. Condemned on 15th March 1987, the day after it became the last member of its class to haul a passenger train on B.R. when it substituted for a failed class 47 and hauled the 07:09 Holyhead - Cardiff between Chester and Crewe. Arrived at Pitsford on 14th July 1988.

25035 bears the joint distinction of being the oldest of the class in preservation and the last main-line locomotive to be built at Darlington.

A full review of the Class 25 is given in Sulzer Diesel Locomotives of British Rail by Brian Webb.
