"The Royal Artilleryman" 45118 1Co-Co1

45118 was built at Crewe in 1962 as D67, but not given the name The Royal Artilleryman until September 1965. It spent most of its working life on the Midland main line.

In December 1973, D67 became 45118, was dual braked and fitted with electric train heating equipment. The name plates were removed by B.R. in April 1986. At the beginning of 1987 it made one last visit to Derby works where it received the bogies from 45116 to extend its service life. This turned out to be the last normal works visit for any "Peak".

The locomotive was withdrawn from service at Tinselly on 8th May 1987 following minor fire damage to one bogie at Rotherham whilst working the Leeds portion of the Newcastle to Bristol mail train. 45118 was towed to March Depot in Cambridgeshire during late 1987.

There it remained until purchased for preservation from B.R. (Derby) on May 11th 1990. After a long journey by road, the locomotive reached Pitsford & Brampton 16th September 1990. 45118 was started for the first time on 10th October 1993 and moved under its own power a week later.

A full review of the Class 45 is given in Sulzer Diesel Locomotives of British Rail by Brian Webb.

What a difference! First during the early stages of restoration, then the finished article.
