Built in 1962 by Birmingham R.C. & W. Company. New to Cricklewood in July 1962 as D5401. Went to Eastfield in June 1969 and converted to push & pull for the Edinburgh - Glasgow services, and re-numbered to 27112.
After the arrival of the 47/7's, this locomotive was altered back to standard fleet and re-numbered to 27056. The first of the class to undergo refurbishment. One of its greatest moments was to haul a Royal Train conveying the Prince of Wales in 1983. Arrived at Pitsford on Saturday 12th March 1988.
In 2006, D5401 was completely repainted high standard, probably the best it has seen in preservation.
A full review of the Class 27 is given in Sulzer Diesel Locomotives of British Rail by Brian Webb.
