D7629 started its life at Tinsley in September 1965. It was fitted with dual (air and vacuum) braking equipment in the 1970's and had its last works overhaul in 1979. Although the Class 25 or Derby Type 2 as it was originally known were mainly built at British Railways' Derby works as the name suggests, 36 examples were in fact built by Beyer-Peacock of Manchester. This was as a result of the desire to see that company survive through a very lean patch. Unfortunately this was not to be and Beyer-Peacock went out of business. Luckily, four examples have survived into preservation.
This particular locomotive was withdrawn on 15th March 1987 and taken to Vic Berry's scrap yard in Leicester for safe storage. It was soon sold for use on the Llangollen Railway where it entered traffic in July 1989. Since then it has also spent some time on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. After spending time at Pitsford the locomotive changed hands and moved to a new home on the Great Central Railway.
