№ S44551 built at Ashford in 1931 for the Southern Railway had many uses as a general goods van during its active life on the main line. The vehicle was renumbered into the departmental fleet as № DS44551 (and possibly later becoming an ‘Internal User’ vehicle) prior to final withdrawal and purchase for preservation.
The identity of this vehicle has been discussed elsewhere, notably at www.departmentals.com where the internal user number № 081969 is used as a reference. Comments in this discussion suggest the vehicle may actually be № 44432.
