Boughton Extension: The final big push!
For a number of years our volunteers have been working hard to complete our 1/2 mile extension to Boughton (by the A5199 and The Windhover pub). All the track is down and the signalling is nearly completed.
However, before we can run trains on the extension we need to complete 2 essential tasks:
1. Refurbish Bridge 11
Bridge 11 is a 7 arch low brick viaduct with an additional iron girder cattle creep bridge at the northern end. The bridge is over 140 years old and has been suffering with water ingress. Phases 1 and 2 of this work has been completed. Click the link below to see photos of progress
2. Build a new Station Platform at Boughton
This comprises a 5 coach platform wall with fill material behind and a finished surface. This will give us a second station for the first time and mean the railway goes from somewhere to somewhere! Work is progressing steadily on site. click the link below to see photos of progress.
In 2018 we were extremely fortunate to be awarded grants that would cover 80% of the materials costs for these projects. This comprises:
- £45,160 from LEADER and
- £15,000 from Daventry District Council
However the grants do not cover the cost of labour. As a result, our volunteers took on the huge task to complete both projects.
As of March 2021 the main platform wall is virtually complete and the first 2 coach lengths of the platform has its final surfacing. New security fencing and other fencing has gone in. The northern section of the platform will be filled with spare material from elsewhere on the railway later in 2021.
We have recently managed to lease an additional piece of adjoining land from The Windhover pub, which will allow the construction of a small bay platform at the southern end also in 2021. This will accommodate the Mk3 buffet coach, which will act as a temporary booking office, waiting room, etc. until a permanent station building can be built.
The first phase of the bridge works (installing a new waterproof concrete deck) was completed during June and July 2019. The second phase (injecting grout into the delaminated brick joints) was completed in September and Oct 2020.
