For a number of years our volunteers have been working hard to complete our 1/2 mile extension to Boughton (by the A5199 and The Windhover pub). All the track is down and the signalling is nearly completed.
However, before we can run trains on the extension we need to complete 2 essential tasks:
1. Refurbish Bridge 11
Bridge 11 is a 7 arch low brick viaduct with an additional iron girder cattle creep bridge at the northern end. The bridge is over 140 years old and has been suffering with water ingress.
2. Build a new Station Platform at Boughton
This comprises a 250m-long platform wall with fill material behind and a finished surface. This will give us a second station for the first time and mean the railway goes from somewhere to somewhere!
In 2018 we were extremely fortunate to be awarded grants that would cover 80% of the materials costs for these projects. This comprises:
- £45,160 from LEADER and
- £15,000 from Daventry District Council
However the grants do not cover the cost of labour. As a result our volunteers have got a big task to complete both projects by November 2019 (under the terms of the grants).
Work on the platform wall has already started and, as of March 2019, the first 50m section nearly completed. However, there is still a very long way to go!
The bridge works is scheduled to commence on 3rd June 2019. The main part of the work (installing a new waterproof concrete deck) will last about 5 weeks. After this the external walls of the viaduct will need brickwork stitching and re-pointing.
We need your help to complete the extension!!!
Help us raise £18,000
You can either donate via our secure Golden Giving fundraising page (and add Gift Aid) via the button below, or send cheques payable to ‘Northampton and Lamport Railway CIO’ to Pitsford and Brampton Station, Pitsford Road, Chapel Brampton, Northampton, NN6 8BA
If you have some spare time at weekends then why not come and get involved with our friendly team? We’d be grateful of all help. In particular, we need anyone with bricklaying experience to help build the platform wall and stitch/re-point the bridge.
Could your business help the Railway? Helping a charitable volunteer organisation like the Northampton and Lamport Railway CIO offers the opportunity for some great PR!
